Among the many hats worn by podcaster and radio and TV personality Adam Carolla is movie star, and The Hammer is the one lead role he has played so far. He conceived the boxing comedy himself, so the role of Jerry Ferro is tailor-made for him.
Having just turned 40, the construction worker decides to move from helping out around the boxing gym to actually fighting competitively. It’s an amiable little sports comedy that coasts along on Carolla’s charm. If you can’t stand the guy (Carolla has always been a rather polarizing figure), you’ll probably never give it a shot. But for low-key laughs about an underdog with the will to win, The Hammer isn’t bad at all.
