Mostly negative reviews and poor box office gave this long overdue sequel, X-Files: I Want to Believe a poor reputation. In reality, this is a solid thriller with lots of good twists. It’s a treat to see David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back in their roles as Mulder and Scully. Their lives have changed greatly since the series ended and I like the way the film explores those changes. Mulder is a wanted man and Scully is a practicing doctor.

I Want to Believe is very much a standalone film. You don’t need to have seen the series or the first movie to enjoy this on its own terms. It disappointed a lot of fans for not furthering into the series’ mytholog, but the filmmakers were faced with a decision of how much to tie it in with what went before. There are still plenty of themes that link it to the TV series.
