J.K. Simmons, who is up for an Oscar for his tremendous performance in Whiplash, was a first-time host on Saturday Night Live last night. I was pretty excited to see this episode because I loved him in Whiplash. I think it’s pretty cool when someone who’s been a familiar face, but never a star, for such a long time gets a role like that and some deserved recognition.

Overall I thought the episode of SNL was pretty good, not great, but it did have some funny stuff. I enjoyed the monologue wear Simmons spoofed his Whiplash character and we got a surprise cameo from former cast member Fred Armisen.

SNL JK Simmons Armisen Highlight

As a Seattle-area resident it was fun to see the Seahawks in the spotlight for the cold open. Players Marshawn Lynch (Kenan Thompson) and Richard Sherman (Jay Pharoah) talk about “Deflategate,” the New York snow storm, and interview Hawks coach Pete Carroll (Taran Killam). The sketch wasn’t as funny as it could have been, but it had its moments.

Keeping up with the Superbowl theme I also enjoyed the “Totino’s Superbowl Commercial” where the wife is more than happy to stay in the kitchen making her husband and his friends snacks throughout the game.

Those are a few of my favorite highlights. To watch the entire episode visit NBC.com/SNL.
