The Originals is the CW Network’s spin-off of the popular The Vampire Diaries. Now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is The Originals: The Complete Second Season, containing all 22 episodes on three discs. For anyone who’s already a Vampire Diaries fan, The Originals has been a must-see since its 2013 debut. Despite a noticeably slip in ratings for season two, The CW has already green-lighted the series for a third season (it will premiere October 8, 2015).
Production values run high as ever throughout the second season, though unfortunately the occasionally weak acting and sometimes-cheesy (and overly serious) dialogue mars believability. But again, if you’re an existing TVD watcher, The Originals is definitely going to be up your alley. The series tracks the Mikaelson siblings, Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies), and Rebekah (Claire Holt). Those completely new to TVD lore would do well to start somewhere much earlier than here. It’s not impossible to get one’s bearings in this world of vampires, werewolves, ‘hybrids’ (the product of vampire/werewolf interbreeding) and witches, but it’s worth pointing out that whatever any detractor might say – The Originals presents a complex, labyrinthine narrative.
While the twisting, turning, interwoven plotlines defy easy synopsis, suffice to say that Joseph Morgan seethes with believable evil as hybrid Klaus. Morgan is hypnotic as the chilling lead character. Sorting through the army of characters can result in a headache, quite frankly, unless you happen to have a very special affinity for this material. But Charles Michael Davis is another standout as vampire Marcel Gerard. He has an easy-going charm and laidback demeanor that contrasts nicely with some of the arguably too-serious elements of the series. The whole package is dressed up very stylishly and the model-looking cast definitely has the type of appeal necessary to keep the intended demographic hooked.
Just like with the recent Warner Bros. companion release, The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Sixth Season, The Originals: The Complete Second Season offers remarkable high definition visuals and audio. The flawless 1080p transfers are complemented by excellent DTS-HD 5.1 lossless mixes.
In terms of special features, probably the coolest item is the “2014 Comic Con Panel” (30 minutes). There’s a 15 minute featurette, “Always and Forever” that give us some interview clips. There are about 20 minutes of deleted scenes as well as a five-minute gag reel. “The Originals: The Awakening Web Series” offers up four very short webisodes that will appeal mainly to hardcore Originals fans (there’s also some behind-the-scenes material concerning the web series). Maybe not the most extensive set of extras to ever accompany a TV season, but a nice selection of material.
The Originals: The Complete Second Season Blu-ray package also includes downloadable Digital HD copies of each of the 22 season two episodes.
