Fear the Walking Dead returns for a second season with “Monster,” a solid episode that gets the survivors out of their neighborhood and out into what’s left of the world. Granted, they head straight for Victor’s (Colman Domingo) yacht, but just about anything is nice change of pace from the house they were stuck in for nearly the entire first season.

What I’m liking about Fear the Walking Dead is seeing some completely different situations than in The Walking Dead. The survivors here are still full of hope and drive. They think they can get somewhere safe and they are determined to do it. The world has fallen apart, but it’s still relatively intact.

A lot of pretty cool stuff happened in this episode, so let’s get to the “What’s cool and what’s not” for the season premiere.

What was cool:

Water walkers: Or should we call them swimmers? Running into the undead in the water is pretty freaky, because who knows what direction their going to go and where the next one is coming from.

Humanity is already waning: First our survivors have to leave a stranded group of people behind and then they find out they are being chased by some kind of crazed boat gang. Clearly there are those who were just waiting for the world to end so they could wreak havoc unchecked.

The walkers are scary again: These guys have no idea handle walkers and they have way more close calls than their counterparts on The Walking Dead.
The not so cool:

Is Alicia really that stupid?: Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) had been painted as “the smart one” out of the Clark kids, but she’s certainly not exercising any brain power here. I’m not sure I would buy that she would give up that much information without thinking, but maybe she’s hard up for male attention.
